Independent governance in aesthetic medicine

Qualifications

At least 20 years of experience. Demonstrated independence as well.

Experience · Current competence · Case-specific independence

The IAGS model requires at least 20 years of relevant clinical experience for independent advisers and outcome reviewers. The criterion is documented work in the appropriate specialty and competence for the question concerned, rather than age.

Current knowledge, the professional authorisation required for the engagement and a documented conflict-of-interest assessment are also required.

A former surgeon is not automatically qualified for every procedure or new technique. An academic title likewise does not replace an assessment of actual experience.

The requirement is a deliberate eligibility criterion of the Society. It does not imply that younger physicians generally provide inferior care or that a given number of years guarantees an outcome.

Evidence required

Assessments cover relevant periods of practice, specialty, experience with the specific question, current capability and possible financial or personal connections.

Time since initial licensing alone is insufficient. Assessment must establish what work was actually performed and the scope for which a person is qualified.

Concurrent activities are not counted twice when calculating duration. Periods and the extent of relevant practice require professional assessment; a calendar calculation alone does not confer eligibility.

No blanket eligibility for “all aesthetic medicine”. The recognised scope of practice is defined explicitly.

Separation from treatment business

Independent medical roles are reserved for physicians who no longer offer or perform paid elective aesthetic treatments.

Assessment also considers relevant financial interests arising through shareholdings, fees, referrals, affiliated institutions or personal relationships.

Appropriate payment for an independent engagement is possible. It must not be tied to treatment, selection of a particular provider or a desired assessment.

Maintaining current competence

Ending commercial treatment activity must not mean ending professional development. Literature review, case conferences and appropriate continuing education should maintain the currency of advice.

If competence is insufficient, the engagement is limited or declined.

Recurring assessment

Relevant information is updated annually and supplemented by case-specific independence assessments. Material changes must also be disclosed between these reviews.

Membership is not eligibility

Society membership, course completion or an expression of interest does not replace professional assessment. Requirements relate to a particular independent medical role and a defined scope of practice.
